Arc Cross-section Determination of Convection Stabilized Arcs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Convection stabilized high current arcs are found in extinction chambers of AC and DC circuit breakers. Such arcs have a radially flat temperature profile with a sharp drop towards the surrounding cold gas. This is because a large fraction of the emitted radiation is reabsorbed at the edge of the arc column. Therefore, it is reasonable to characterize an arc of this type by its cross-section A. In this contribution, the crosssection of convection stabilized arcs in a model circuit breaker is determined separately by electrical measurements, optical high-speed imaging and the heating chamber pressure drop. The theoretically expected cross-sections increase with current (A ∝ i) and drop with blow pressure (A ∝ p). This was confirmed by all three measurement techniques. However, it became clear that light emitting, electrical and fluid dynamical cross-sections are ambiguous and do not always describe the same physical property.

Systematic Effects on Tangential and Radial Arc Statistics: the Finite Source Size and Ellipticities of the Lens and Source
It has been recognized that the arc statistics of gravitational lensing is a useful probe of the density profile of clusters of galaxies. We examine several systematic effects which are important in predicting the number of arcs, with particular attention to the difference between tangential and radial arcs. First we derive an analytic expression of the cross section for radial arcs taking acco...

متن کاملDayside reconnection under interplanetary magnetic field By-dominated conditions: The formation and movement of bending arcs
Based upon a survey of global auroral images collected by the Polar Ultraviolet Imager, Kullen et al. (2002) subdivided polar cap auroral arcs into a number of categories, including that of “bending” arcs. We are concerned with those bending arcs that appear as a bifurcation of the dayside auroral oval and which subsequently form a spur intruding into the polar cap. Once formed, the spur moves ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Baryonic Cooling on Giant Arc Abundances
Using ray tracing for simple analytic profiles, we demonstrate that the lensing cross section for producing giant arcs has distinct contributions due to arcs formed through image distortion only, and arcs form from the merging of two or three images. We investigate the dependence of each of these contributions on halo ellipticity and on the slope of the density profile, and demonstrate that at ...
متن کاملAuroral-arc splitting by intrusion of a new convection channel
During a run of the Common Programme Three of the EISCAT radar the splitting of an auroral arc was observed by high time-resolution, ground-based cameras when the UHF radar beam was close to the arc. The evening eastward electrojet situation with a largescale northward ionospheric electric field was disturbed by the intrusion of a convection channel with southward electric field from the east. ...
